The Times Higher Education (THE) has issued the 20th edition of its World’s Best Universities rankings. Oxford University in Britain is ranked first for an unprecedented eighth consecutive year, while Stanford University is ranked second, making it the top-ranked university in the United States.
Third place goes to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The largest edition of the World University Rankings 2024 evaluates research-intensive universities across 18 performance indicators covering their primary missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and internationalization. It now comprises 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions, up from 1,799 last year.
The University of Oxford, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, University of Cambridge (UK), Princeton University, California Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, University of California, Berkeley, and Yale University are the top ten universities on the list, which is still dominated by American universities.
U.S. And UK Top Rankings But Waning Positions
With 169 universities included in the ranking—more than any other nation—the United States has 13 in the top 20 and 56 in the top 200. Since the 2021 edition, Asia has surpassed Europe in terms of university representation, while both Africa and South America have more than 100 institutions represented.
Three British universities are ranked in the top 10, with Oxford ranking first, Cambridge ranking fifth, and Imperial College London ranking eighth. With 25 in the top 200 and 11 in the top 100, the nation’s 104 colleges are rated third overall.
Despite being at the top of the rankings, American and British colleges are losing ground, according to THE, as there have been three fewer American and four fewer British universities in the top 200 since 2021.
Europe’s Highest

Germany had 49 universities on the list, with Technical University of Munich coming in first and tied for 30th. There are eight colleges in the nation ranked in the top 100, and 21 in the top 200.
University of Barcelona holds the top rating in Spain, rising 30 spots from 182 to equal 152 this year.
This year, North Macedonia, Armenia, Kosovo, and Bosnia & Herzegovina are the four new European nations represented.
In the band between 351 and 400, Koç University, Middle East Technical University, and Sabancı University are Turkey’s top three universities.
With 664 representations, Europe is the second most represented continent behind Asia.
China’s Surge
China now boasts two universities in the top 20, seven in the top 100, and thirteen in the top 200, compared to two top 100 universities six years ago in the 2018 edition.
From 15 in 2021 to 30 this year, the number of Chinese universities in the top 400 of the World University Rankings has doubled. The best-performing Chinese university is Tsinghua University, which ranks 12th out of 86 universities in the nation, which is the fifth-highest ranking.
Asia The Most Represented
Asia has 737 rated universities, making it the most represented continent.
The other institution in the nation, Nanyang Technological institution (NTU), is ranked 32nd, while the National University of Singapore is placed 19th.
With 119 universities, Japan has the second-highest number of universities in the world; the University of Tokyo is still the top university in the nation, coming in at number 29.
India boasts 91 universities in the ranking, a record number. The top university in the nation, ranked between 201 and 250, is the Indian Institute of Science. Pakistan, its northern neighbor, has 39 universities on its list, the top-ranked being Quaid-i-Azam University, which is situated in bands 401–500.
Middle East, North Africa And Africa
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel lead the Middle East and North African region, each having a university ranked in the top 250. Egypt’s top university in band 601–800 is Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), which was not ranked the previous year.
Africa has experienced the most increase of any continent, with participation growing by 16% annually and rankings jumping from 97 to 113 institutions. University of Cape Town is the top-ranked university in Africa, coming in at 167th position.
Latin America And The Caribbean
A total of 144 universities from 12 different nations are ranked in the Latin America and Caribbean area.
In the 201–250 band, the University of São Paulo in Brazil continues to be the top-ranked school in the area. The University of Campinas in Brazil, which ranks 351–400, and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, which ranks 401–500, round out the regional top three.
There are a lot of recent admissions into Chile and Colombia: six newly ranked universities in Chile, five in Colombia, and two in Brazil. With a ranking in the 801–1,000 bracket, University of la Costa in Colombia is the top newcomer in Latin America.
The two top-ranked universities in Mexico, National Autonomous University of Mexico and Monterrey Institute of Technology, both moved up a tier to 601–800 and 801–1,000, respectively.
For The First Time
For the first time, 165 universities are ranked: five from North America, 89 from Asia, 38 from Europe, 19 from Africa, and 14 from South America.
At the national level, there are 20 recently ranked Indian institutions, 14 Turkish universities, 11 Pakistani universities, and 9 Algerian and Iranian universities. South Korea’s Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), which is ranked in the 351–400 range, has the best performance out of these 165 universities.
The most inclusive and worldwide university rating in the world, THE’s World University rating began with 200 universities and currently has about 2,000.
